Māori leaders are promoting two separate initiatives to reopen boarding schools for Māori boys in the upper North Island.

A group of old boys from the former St Stephen's School at Bombay, also known by its Māori name Tipene, have opened a website for registrations for a new Māori boys' school which they plan to open in 2020.

The TIPENE Reopening Committee has launched a website where families can register their interest in sending their boys to a proposed new school.

St Stephen's School in Auckland is set to re-open at the start of 2020, that's 20 years after its doors were closed.

The site of the former Māori boarding school in Bombay currently sits empty - and there are no guarantees the school will return to its old site.
